In this session we will explore the vital role of effective delegation in veterinary practice, focusing on the utilisation of Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs), Student Veterinary Nurses (SVNs), and Patient Care Assistants (PCAs). Grounded in the framework of Schedule 3 of the Veterinary Surgeons Act, we will discuss how to identify tasks that can be delegated and work through examples of clinical scenarios. By optimising the diverse skills of the veterinary nursing team, practices can improve workflow efficiency, patient care, and practice productivity, while enabling veterinary surgeons to focus on role specific tasks and more complex cases.

The session also considers the benefits of broadening the scope of nursing tasks on career satisfaction, team retention, and burnout prevention. Barriers such as unclear structures, lack of supervision, and cultural resistance are addressed, with strategies for fostering a positive delegation culture and supporting clinical development. Using an interactive approach, we will work through how to implement the strategic utilisation of the whole team to promote collaboration, sustainability, and optimal patient outcomes. Both veterinary nurses and veterinary surgeons are invited to attend this exciting session.
